The DEA’s ultimate goal is to reduce drug-related addiction and death rates. Employees of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) try to stop entities that are involved in the developing, processing, or distribution of illegal controlled substances.
They do this by conducting investigations into someone who violates controlled substance laws, seizing any properties linked to illegal drug trafficking, and collaborating with federal, state, and local law enforcement, among other things.

The National Provider Identifier (NPI) is an Administrative Simplification Standard under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
For covered health care facilities, the NPI is a unique identification number. In the administrative and financial transactions required by HIPAA, covered health care providers, all health plans, and health care clearinghouses must use NPIs.
Is DEA number same as NPI?
NPIs are significantly different from DEA numbers and do not act as a replacement. An NPI is a unique identifier for a healthcare provider that does more than just prescribe controlled drugs. As a result, while not all providers with an NPI will be eligible for a DEA number; all DEA number holders will have an NPI.
One of the most noticeable distinctions between an NPI and a DEA number is the department that issues them: the CMS for NPIs and the DEA for DEA numbers.
